清光緒年間台灣巡撫劉銘傳治理台灣時，積極建設台灣，力倡設置鐵路。鐵路開工後，首先建構基隆至新竹間鐵路，其中位於基隆獅球嶺的隧道工程最為艱鉅，隧道全長不過約二百三十五公尺，從光緒十四年春動工至十六年的夏天，前後卻耗時三十個月才鑿通。劉銘傳隧道為台灣第一條鐵路專用隧道，也是台灣僅有的清領時期鐵路隧道……劉銘傳隧道為市定古蹟，位在基隆安樂區獅球嶺，又名獅球嶺隧道。光緒十六年（1890）完工，日治以後，將
